Why study for the MSc in Events Management?

The course is particularly suited to those wishing to develop and expand their knowledge and understanding of the Events Industry to postgraduate level. It is designed to meet the needs of those who wish to pursue a career in the industry from a strategic perspective.
Course participants will come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and applicants from abroad are particularly encouraged.

The course will be of interest to:

  • Graduates from any discipline seeking to become managers in the events industry
  • Existing managers who are currently engaged in the events industry and who command a strategic overview of their company or aspire to this function within the next few years. These managers will have an existing degree and or professional qualifications relevant to the events industry and wish to:

    Make more effective use of their current knowledge and expertise

    Maximise their own efficiency and that of their organisation

  • Managers currently engaged in the events industry who have no qualifications but have considerable and relevant experience and who can demonstrate the ability to succeed and benefit from the programme of study.

    The university is committed to maintaining opportunities for those with non-traditional qualifications and with previous management experience using accreditation of prior learning for entry on to the course when appropriate

    Modes of Delivery
    Full time/Part time at Leeds Metropolitan University
    · 3 semesters
    · Minimum 12 months, maximum 5 years
    · Normally September start
    · Part time provision by negotiation
    Part time off site/in company (demand led)
    · Block delivery
    · 2x2 full days per module
    · London base at Westminster College
    · Minimum 2 years

Course content
The course is delivered and assessed in English and is suitable for those students with an honours degree, degree or equivalent qualification in Events Management and/or extensive experience in the Events Industry.

  • School Elective Modules (2 from 3)
  • Operations Management and Quality Assurance
  • Strategic Human Resource Management
  • Strategic Marketing

  • Impacts and Risks
  • Course Elective Modules (1)
  • Students may choose 2 x .5 elective from modules such as Business and Association Event Management, Corporate Financial Management, Innovative Communication Strategies, Volunteer Management, Venue Management.

Modes of assessment
Students are assessed through presentations, seminar papers, reports, essays, projects, examinations and individual learning agreements.

Entry requirements
When you apply for the course you must provide evidence of appropriate academic qualifications and/or experience. Qualifications from any country will be considered. However, we need to be satisfied that you have the equivalent of the following UK qualifications as a minimum:

MSc Events Management
Normally the minimum entry requirement is a good honours degree*. A Postgraduate Diploma or a professional qualification recognised as being equivalent to an honours degree is also acceptable.

Postgraduate Diploma/Certificate
Normally the minimum entry requirement is a degree or other qualification at an equivalent level*.

*Each applicant will be considered on his/her own merit. The course seeks to recruit students for whom there is a reasonable expectation that they will be able to benefit from the programme, fulfil its objectives and achieve the standard required for the award. Students may therefore be recruited without formal qualifications but with relevant experience.

English Language Requirement
Proficiency in English equivalent to IELTS band 6.0, or equivalent.

Why study with the UK Centre for Events Management?
Recruitment to undergraduate courses in Events Management at Leeds Metropolitan University began in 1996. Since this time the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management has developed excellent working relationships with associations and employers within the events industry.

Following a period of growth and development, the UK Centre for Events Management was launched in September 2000. The Centre has been established in order to consolidate our position as the leading UK provider of events education in the UK.

With 13 full time academic staff and over 350 students, the Centre provides the impetus and focus for further developing education, training, research and consultancy for the events industry. One of the aims of the Centre is to support the development of professionalism within the events industry.

Our courses provide both an academic and professionally recognised qualification and open the door to challenging careers in the vibrant and rapidly expanding events industry. Our graduates have a mix of skills required by the industry and are much sought after as professional managers.

As part of the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, we achieved an 'excellent' rating from the Quality Assurance Agency during the review visit in May 2001.

Leeds - The City
Leeds has a population in excess of 7000,000 and is the major city in the region. It is the most important financial centre outside London and is home to multi national companies and other major employers such as banks, accountancy and law firms, and the hotel and tourism industry. Located in West Yorkshire, mid way between London and Edinburgh, the city possesses excellent rail and road links with the rest of the UK. The local Leeds/Bradford airport provides regular flights to major cities in the UK and abroad.
